TURP Surgery
Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) is a surgical procedure used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a condition where the prostate gland enlarges, causing urinary difficulties. TURP is performed to relieve symptoms like frequent urination, weak urine flow, and difficulty starting or stopping urination.
The surgery involves inserting a thin instrument through the urethra to reach the prostate, where a resectoscope is used to remove excess prostate tissue. This minimally invasive approach typically requires no external incisions and can be done under local or general anesthesia. Recovery usually includes a short hospital stay and the use of a catheter, with most patients experiencing improved urinary function within weeks.
